There’s something in my Eye.
While finding the right song to sing I listened to a few other Josh Ritter tracks and this one when I was reading the lyrics along with the song to test it out I actually couldn’t get through with out tearing up lol :’(
So I thought I’d ruin everyone else’s day too by sharing it
My challenge is to read the lyrics or better sing along with the song as you listen and tell me if you can make it without even a little lump in the throat.
Lyrics:
He opens his eyes falls I love at first sight
With the girl in the doorway
What beautiful lines and how full of life
After thousands of years what a face to wake up to
He holds back a sigh as she touches his arm
She dusts off the bed where ’til now he’s been sleeping
And under miles of stone, the dried fig of his heart
Under scarab and bone starts back to it’s beatingShe carries him home in a beautiful boat
He watches the sea from a porthole in stowage
He can hear all she says as she sits by his bed
And one day his lips answer her in her own language
The days quickly pass he loves making her laugh
The first time he moves it’s her hair that he touches
She asks, “Are you cursed?” He says, “I think that I’m cured”
Then he talks of the Nile and the girls in bulrushes
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/j/josh_ritter/the_curse.html ]
In New York he is laid in a glass covered case
He pretends he is dead people crowd round to see him
But each night she comes round and the two wander down
The hall of the tomb that she calls a museum
Often he stops to rest but then less and less
Then it’s her that looks tired staying up asking questions
He learns how to read from the papers that she
Is writing about him and he makes correctionsIt’s his face on her book more and more come to look
Families from Iowa, upper west siders
Then one day it’s too much he decides to get up
And as chaos ensues he walks outside to find her
She’s using a cane and her face looks to pale
But she’s happy to see him as they walk he supports her
She asks, “Are you cursed?” but his answer’s obscured
In a sandstorm of flashbulbs and rowdy reportersSuch reanimation the two tour the nation
He gets out of limos he meets other women
He speaks of her fondly their nights in the museum
But she’s just one more rag now he’s dragging behind him
She stops going out she just lies there in bed
In hotels in whatever towns they are speaking
Then her face starts to set and her hands start to fold
And one day the dried fig of her heart stops it’s beatingLong ago in the ship she asked, “Why pyramids?”
He said, “Think of them as an immense invitation”
She asked, “Are you cursed?” He said, “I think that I’m cured”
Then he kissed her and hoped that she’d forget that question

Beautiful song, quite an unusual topic for a song. I’m sorry to tell you even the song is awesome it’s really hard for me to cry, so no tears here :-
very beautiful song!
Okay, now there’s something in both my eyes.
Wow. Such a beautiful, unique song!
HUGS!
PS…You can “ruin” my day any day.
@xXxlovelylollipop - It is such a strange song, but I find it really moving for some reason, time and it’s passing can be sad
I’m glad I didn’t make you cry
hehe
@lvlylucia - Yea A wonderful concept for lyrics
@AdamsWomanFell - Hahaha I’d listened to it a couple times before but not followed the lyrics, it certainly is unique.
Thanks for the Hugs
@BFB1131 - Time and it’s passing, I kind’a love it you know. The illsuions we hold dear to us, that’s what I find sad in this song.
Now you did it
jk
Really like the song, kind of reminds of Paul Simon… and, I guess, the old school folk type storyteller songwriters, which I’ve always enjoyed, more blues though… Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, etc.
I didn’t get a lump in my throat… I don’t usually unless I’m watching a sad Doctor Who (weird… don’t ask, I don’t know why) or the movie Field of Dreams (also weird), aside from that I’m relatively stoic.
<33333
Yeah, I am cursed and no one can cure me
@xXxlovelylollipop - Hehe yea I guess I must have some issues with Time :S
@BlindSight22 - Yea It is kind of folksy I only know about the guy because I heard the Long Shadows song at the end of a TV show lol
Love Muddy waters too
Well i’m sorry to say I would want to cry if someone put on an episode of Doctor who but not because it was sad
Field of dreams? I can see why that would get to someone…but yes it’s also weird lol
@jennylovve - <3
@RestlessButterfly - You’re not cursed or cured, there was nothing wrong with you in the first place
@BFB1131 - Are you dissin’ the Doctor? You do know he wears a bow tie now, right, and bow ties are cool. Haha.
@BlindSight22 - A bow tie??….maybe I need to rethink my position
@BFB1131 - Sweet…:))
