The Future
It’s very almost 2011…2011!!!!! Come on we are literally in the future!
In the eighties or even the nineties most sci-fi films didn’t even go as high as 2011 when they imagined spaceships and aliens and all manner of cool stuff. Now okay we don’t have terribly cool spaceships yet, or hover cars but lets for a second consider what we do have.
In the past 20 – 30 years the entire world of computers has grown, not just computers but the internet too. I can sit here on a tiny island of another tiny island and order something directly from China and have it arrive within a week! I can write something on Xanga and have it seen by people from around the entire planet, I can make a website to sell a product that I’ve never touched and don’t manufacture to customers I’ve never met from all around the world.
Almost everyone has personal communicators that can connect to almost anyone else on the planet, let alone the more advanced versions such as Ipods that are far more powerful than an entire super computer from only 30 years ago and yet are no bigger than the palm of your hand.
We can enter fantastical worlds that look almost real either through film where CGI has gotten to a point where you really can do anything and make it look as real as anything you can film. Or games in which we can experience un-imaginable things first hand or join in on shared worlds with tens of thousands of other players, to create entire new universes with their own economies, wars, art, etc. etc.
Home users can generate their own content within only a few hours, from films to music and professional graphic art. There is admittedly extremely wasteful but still impressive global transport and supply networks that connect the entire planet, land, sea and air.
We do have hover trains that reach incredible speeds, some over 300kph (I think) lasers are common place, you can even order lasers powerful enough to burn dark coloured things for relatively low prices on ebay.Medical advances are almost too many to list, but the ability to manipulate genes and create entirely new organs or even new forms of customised life is pretty mind blowing.
And most importantly of all in my mind is that things that once were firmly in the esoteric world are almost becoming common knowledge such as The Secret and various other ideas that are blurring the lines between science and the esoteric, like Quantum research that is uncovering the underlying energetic background of all reality. Advancing us not only scientifically and technologically but also spiritually and personally, proving that we ourselves have the power to change our world.
There are also Finally robots! Robots are everywhere. Artificial intelligence is being explored and advanced even in basic consumer products like computer games and toys. Entire facilities are governed by largely computerised systems, remote control drones fight many of our wars.
Not the most positive side of the future but we can now really quite easily create weapons with the power to end all life on the entire planet….depressing yes, but also pretty damn futuristic. We aren’t in space but we can look farther and with more detail into it and we have had (still do have I think) a few actual space stations with people able to live for some time in space…which is just cool
not to mention we have surrounded our globe with satellites that direct us and channel mind-blowing amounts of data and information.
So it’s 2011 personally it’s no where near futuristic enough for me yet but I take comfort in the fact that in my own lifetime the acceleration of technology and awareness has been so fast and far reaching that it can only mean that either we are going to advance at such a speed that we make a huge mistake and wipe ourselves out or things keep multiplying and multiplying until suddenly we find ourselves in a future that we could never have even imagined.
Either way as with every New Year I’m excited, the entire world is now moving much more as one thing and while that can still go either way whatever happens it’s going to be big and it’s going to be interesting.
So I say Bring on the future!

It’s crazy that it will be 2011 this weekend. I knew how much the world is changing technologically wise, but hearing the specifics from you makes me realize a lot more how things in life are getting better.
I already think the world has been amazing, but I’m also looking forward to the future. With some of the things I’m struggling with, every doctor of mine is confident that there will be something to help in the future since I’m still young.
I’ll go with you .. Bring on the future!
@jennylovve - Yeah good point, I forgot about the really incredible advancments in prosthetics and even computer implants.
there’s so much thats possible.
I’ll get us fitted for the classic one piece plastic uniforms all the seventies sci-fi programs seem to have hehe
3 more months and 2011 is over! Time run faster and hurricane sometimes.
